How to clean and care for a bell-metal singing bowl

Protect the finish, rim and surface without harsh polish.

The short answer

Handle a bell-metal bowl with clean, dry hands, remove dust with a soft cloth and store it securely so the rim cannot be knocked. Avoid aggressive polishing unless it is appropriate for that specific finish; a matt or deliberately patinated surface should not automatically be polished bright. Long-term care should prioritise dryness, gentle handling and finish-specific instructions.

Everyday care

  • Handle with clean, dry hands; skin oils and moisture are the main routine risk.
  • Dust with a soft dry cloth. Nothing abrasive, and no scouring pads.
  • Dry thoroughly if the bowl ever becomes damp.
  • Rest it on its cushion rather than directly on hard surfaces.

Protect the rim above everything else

The rim is the thinnest and most exposed part of the bowl and the part whose condition matters most to how it sounds and how safely it can be rim-played. A knock that dents or burrs the rim is the one kind of damage that is difficult to undo. Store the bowl where it cannot be struck by something else, and never stack bowls rim to rim without padding.

Polishing: match the finish

Metal polish is appropriate for a bright polished finish and wrong for a matt or deliberately patinated one, where it will remove the surface the instrument was made to have. Decide what finish you have before deciding whether to polish at all, and if in doubt, do not. A dull-looking bowl is a reversible situation; a stripped matt finish is not.

Storage

  • Somewhere dry, at stable temperature, out of direct sun.
  • In a case or wrapped, if it is transported.
  • With cushions and strikers stored so they cannot press against the rim.

Frequently asked

How do I clean a bell-metal bowl?

A soft dry cloth for dust, clean dry hands when handling, and thorough drying if it gets damp. Avoid abrasives entirely.

Can I use metal polish?

Only if the bowl has a bright polished finish. On a matt or patinated surface, polish removes the intended finish permanently. If you are unsure which you have, do not polish.

How should I store my singing bowl?

Dry, stable in temperature, out of direct sun, and positioned so nothing can knock the rim. Pad between bowls if they are stored together.
