Sound healing
What is sound healing?
Sound healing uses sound, resonance and intentional listening as part of relaxation, meditation and mindful practice. You do not need prior experience, belief, or any training to begin.
ANURAVA instruments are intended for sound, meditation and wellbeing practice. They are not a medical treatment and are not a substitute for medical care.
Common questions
Starting from the beginning.
A singing bowl is a metal bowl that produces a sustained tone when struck, or when a striker is moved around its rim. ANURAVA bowls are hand-forged from bell metal, a copper-and-tin alloy, in Bankura, West Bengal.
Rest it on its cushion, strike the outer wall gently, and listen until the sound fades completely. To make it sing, move the suede side of the striker slowly and evenly around the rim with steady pressure.
Use the sound as the thing you follow. Strike once, listen until you can no longer hear it, then strike again. It gives attention something to rest on instead of asking you to force your mind quiet.
Around 6–8 inches suits most people starting out: easy to sound, easy to place, and easy to hold. ANURAVA ONE is approximately 7 inches for this reason.
It refers to the fundamental pitch of the bowl, measured in hertz. Because these bowls are hand-forged, the exact frequency varies from piece to piece, so we only state a measured frequency for an individual instrument we have actually measured.
Sustain depends on diameter, wall thickness, how it is struck and the room. Larger and heavier bowls generally hold longer. A specific duration is only meaningful for a specific measured instrument.
A bell gives a short, bright strike. A singing bowl gives a longer, more complex tone that can also be played continuously around the rim, which makes it more useful for extended listening.
Bell metal is prepared and cast as a blank, brought up to working heat, and opened and raised by repeated hammering, returning to the fire as it hardens. The rim and form are then trued and the surface finished.
Handle it with clean, dry hands, wipe it with a soft dry cloth, and store it on its cushion on a stable surface. Do not use metal polish on a matt finish.
Yes. No training or prior experience is needed — striking a bowl and listening is the whole practice.
Begin with one bowl.
ANURAVA ONE is a single fixed specification, chosen so a first instrument needs no research.
